101 Recipes for the Grill

Mark Bittman, of the New York Times (“The Minimalist”), and author of my new favorite cookbook, How to Cook Everything, has come up with another one of his fantastic lists of easy but intriguing small recipes, this time for the grill: 101 Fast Recipes for Grilling.

Some of my favorites include:

  • #20: Grill pineapple (or anything, really, from pork to tofu to eggplant). Make a sauce of half-cup peanut butter, a tablespoon (or more) soy sauce, a dash (or more) sriracha chili sauce, a handful of basil or mint and enough warm water to thin.
  • #66: Peaches, plums, strawberries and watermelon (kebab). Finish with a sprinkle of salt and perhaps a drizzle of balsamic vinegar.
  • #60: Grilled coleslaw: Lightly char wedges of green and red cabbage and carrots. Let cool, then shred and toss with a little mayo, vinegar, salt and sugar.
  • # 79: Grind beef, combine with crumbled blue cheese and chopped toasted walnuts (burger). Top, if it doesn’t sound too effete, with sliced grilled pear.
  • #84: Actual grilled cheese: Use good bread, good cheese, tomato slices and maybe a little mustard; brush with melted butter or olive oil and grill with a weight on top.

If you like to grill at all, summer time or year round, you should check out these creative recipes. There’s an incredible variety of everything from appetizers to dessert, with ideas for grilling just about anything edible. I guarantee it will make your mouth water just to read them!

  1. I am hoping to do a lot of batch grilling this summer, so I don’t have to use the oven as much. The link should provide a lot of ideas, to expand my grilling recipes.

    • There are so many good ideas in this list–I’m sure you will find more than a few things to try out!

He’s done these lists for salads, appetizers and a couple of other things–they’re always interesting.

I’ve never tried grilling fruit but this sounds awesome!

    • I’ve had grilled peaches and pineapple and they were unbelievably good. I never thought either about grilling other fruit, and it would be a great way to use up the coals after the main dish has been cooked rather than just letting them burn out.
